Scaling across India: Buzz Women Academy Fellowship

Buzz Academy Fellowship IMAGE

Over the past decade, Buzz Women India has developed and refined a model for building women's leadership at the grassroots level through the pillars of financial literacy, solidarity groups, climate action, and entrepreneurship. The results speak for themselves. But how do you scale impact without further scaling the organization? That question sits at the heart of the Buzz Women Academy Fellowship.

There are two ways to grow our reach and impact. The first is to keep doing the work directly. It’s meaningful, but it has limits. The second is to build the conditions for others to do the work themselves: to develop a curriculum and toolkit so powerful and well-grounded that it can travel, be adapted, and be owned by local leaders in contexts far beyond our own.

From doing to enabling

The Buzz Women Academy Fellowship takes the second path. It is a pioneering initiative in India aimed at catalyzing women leaders through capacity building. We equip them to design and implement gender-equitable, gender-just programs for women in rural areas across the country. The Buzz Women curriculum and framework built over the past decade serves as the foundation.

Local leadership, local relevance

One of the core insights behind the fellowship is this: what works in one place does not necessarily work in another. Leadership looks different in different communities, and local leaders are best placed to define what it means in their own context.

Rather than imposing a single model, the fellowship brings together potential collaboration partners in a shared learning forum. We create a space to exchange knowledge, reflect on the meaning of leadership, and develop contextually relevant approaches.

Scalability without empire-building

The Buzz Academy Fellowship runs from April 2026 to March 2029. It’s built for women who are already leading work of their own and want to deepen it. The first cohort has just begun: eleven women from eleven Indian states. Over the course of three years, they will be comprehensively trained and certified in the full Buzz Women curriculum. The goal is not to create dependency, but to develop partners who can implement the program independently. These organizations and leaders carry the work forward in their own communities, in their own way.

This is scalability without empire-building. We are not looking to create large organizational structures. We are looking for partners who want to make this work their own. The first Buzz Women Academy Fellowship cohort in India is a beautiful step in that direction.
