Practicing sustainable farming

Bharatamma (48) who is from Tumkur district, has 2 acres land where she cultivates coconut trees entirely relying on rain as source of water. She learnt the importance of having recharge pits on land from the video made by Buzz Women. Now being monsoon season, her family dug pits in 2 corners of their land. They filled the pits with dried leaves, which were fallen on the land. This has 2 benefits: 1. groundwater is recharged slowly and steadily when it rains 2. dried leaves turn into natural fertilizer overtime and can be used in her land again for improving soil fertility.

She says “I have learnt the importance of recharge pit and that I can protect my land by recharging the rain water. I strongly believe having done this will recharge the groundwater below my land and provide water during summer season too.”
